How To Apply Nematodes

Nematodes are an excellent natural solution for controlling lawn grubs, but to get the best results, proper application is key. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply nematodes to your lawn and ensure they’re effective.

When to Use Nematodes
Grubs typically start feeding on your lawn in April and again in August. To control them effectively:

1st Application: Apply in May when the soil temperature reaches 10°C (50°F) or higher.

2nd Application: For comprehensive control, apply again in the fall (August to October) to tackle any new grubs that hatch during the summer.

How to Apply Nematodes
Follow these tips for the best results when applying nematodes:

1. Timing and Conditions:
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Nematodes are sensitive to UV rays, so avoid applying them in direct sunlight. The best times for application are early morning, evening, or on cloudy days.

2. Moisture:
Pre-application: Ensure your lawn is moist before applying. Water deeply, ideally when it’s raining, to help nematodes move through the soil more easily.

Post-application: Keep the soil moist for at least 10 days after application to allow the nematodes to target and kill grubs effectively.

3. Application Equipment:
Hose-End Sprayer: For best results, set the sprayer to the highest water flow setting and consider adding dye to monitor distribution.

Backpack Sprayer: If using a backpack sprayer, periodically tip the container to keep nematodes suspended.

Application Schedule:
Nematodes work in cycles for optimal control of grubs. Stick to this application schedule:

1st Application: May or June

2nd Application: August, September, or October

3rd Application: The following year in May or June

Soil Conditions:
Ensure the soil is moist, but not overly saturated. Nematodes need a water film to move and reach the grubs effectively.

Soil Wetness: Apply only when the soil is moist down to the level of the grubs. Avoid dry turf.

Coverage Guidelines

Nematode Quantity Turf Coverage Mixed with Water Applied with Water
10 million  2000 ft² (185 m²)  1 gallon (3.8 L)  15 gallons (56.8 L)
 25 million  5000 ft² (464 m²)  2.5 gallons (9.5 L)  40 gallons (151.4 L)
 50 million  10,000 ft² (929 m²)  5 gallons (18.9 L)  80 gallons (302.8 L)
 100 million  20,000 ft² (1858 m²)  10 gallons (37.8 L)  160 gallons (605.7 L)

Important Note: Apply with enough water to penetrate the soil down to the level where the grubs are located. If using a watering can or pail, keep the mixture agitated to prevent uneven distribution. Apply within 2 hours of mixing, or aerate to keep nematodes alive.

Tips for Success:
Avoid UV exposure: As nematodes are sensitive to UV rays, apply during cooler times of the day or on cloudy days.

Use multiple applications: In some cases, multiple applications may be necessary if soil conditions aren’t ideal or to address a persistent infestation.
