How Do I Plant My Tree?

Planting a tree correctly is crucial for its health and long-term success. At Van Dongen’s Nurseries, we’ve refined our planting process to help you achieve the best results.

Digging the Hole
Dig a hole wide enough to allow for 1 foot (30 cm) of triple mix to be placed around the sides of the root ball. The hole should not be deeper than the root ball. Remove clay from the hole and dispose of it. Good native soil can be mixed with triple mix to enhance soil quality.
If planting in clay or poorly drained soils the outside edge of the hole should be dug deeper than the inside to improve drainage.

Positioning the Tree
Place the tree on undisturbed soil. The base of the trunk should be level with or up to 10% higher than the surrounding soil grade. This helps ensure that the root ball is properly situated and avoids water pooling around the trunk.

Extra Touches
For trees and shrubs, install the MYKE Root Enhancer (read more on our “What is Myke” Blog) on the side of the root ball, mixed into the backfill soil as close to the roots as possible. Ideally, apply this in the top half of the hole/backfilled soil to support surface roots.
A thin layer of soil, compost, and mulch can be added on top of the roots, but ensure compost and mulch are kept 3 inches away from the trunk to avoid rot.

Handling Different Container Types

Wire Basket/Balled/Burlap: Do not remove the burlap or wire. Fill ¾ of the hole around the root ball with good soil and pack it firmly. Remove any ropes and cut or bend back excess burlap and wire loops. Complete backfilling, stake the tree if necessary, and water thoroughly.

Plastic Pots: Remove the pot before planting. Gently tap the sides to loosen the soil and carefully pull the tree out of the container. If roots are wrapped around the outside, make a few vertical cuts through the dense roots.

Grow Bags: Place the tree in the hole, turn the bag on its side, and carefully remove the bottom of the bag. Set the tree upright and backfill ¾ of the hole with good soil. Pull the fabric and rope straight up, ensuring the root system is not disturbed. Finish backfilling and, if roots are growing through the bags, make vertical slashes around the bag without damaging the roots.

Fibre Paper Pots: Do not remove the container; it will decompose over time. Remove the rim of the fibre container and make several cuts in the side, but do not remove the bottom.

Staking the Tree
If your tree is exposed to wind, staking is important. Use staking kits aligned with the prevailing wind. Ensure the wire is shielded with the provided hose to prevent bark damage and is positioned above any branches to prevent sliding.

Watering
Soak the root ball thoroughly right after planting. Allow the soil to dry out slightly before the next watering, which could take a few days depending on conditions. For detailed watering guidelines, refer to our watering blog.
